The Night Shift

Ten animals at the sheet, four on the trail, and the stories that make people forget they came for a sloth.

Rule of the manual: every fact here is either published science or a stated scientific hypothesis. Where scientists disagree, we say so — the argument is a better story than a fake certainty.

Part Zero

The problem with the word “biodiversity”

People hear it their whole lives. Almost nobody has ever felt it. That is the entire opportunity, and the light trap is the only tool we own that solves it in ninety seconds.

A monkey is one animal. A sloth is one animal. A toucan is one animal, and if it doesn't show up, the forest failed the guest. That is a terrible business to be in. The sheet is different: the sheet is a wall of proof that arrives on its own, every warm night, whether or not the forest is in the mood.

Here is the framing that worked on the course, and it came from a guest, not a scientist: you cannot perceive biodiversity. You can put it on a postcard. You can read it in a bird book. But birds are binoculars and distance. The sheet is a metre in front of your face and it is moving, and every single thing on it is a different species.

Four numbers, and how to use them

Never say a number a guest can't feel. Say the number, then immediately convert it into a body.

The line that lands: “Of everything you are looking at right now, most of it has never been given a name by anybody. Not because nobody looked here — because there aren't enough scientists alive to keep up.”

And the honest brag: the night that blew everyone's mind on the course was the worst night of the month — a bright moon competing with our bulbs. New moon, a little rain, and it gets better. Tell guests that. It makes the forest sound generous instead of lucky.

How to build a story you haven't been taught yet

You are going to meet animals that aren't in this manual. Every story below is built on the same four beats. Learn the shape and you can improvise for the rest of your career.

1 · Name it last

Open with the behaviour, not the taxonomy. “This one has no mouth” beats “this is a saturniid.” The name is the reward at the end, not the entry fee.

2 · Anchor it in a human

Give the animal a job people recognise: farmer, perfumer, jammer, bodyguard, barometer, forger. The guest now has a hook to hang the biology on.

3 · Break it

One impossible fact. Only one. The moment two arrive, both get forgotten. Say it, then stop talking and let the silence work.

4 · Turn it back on us

End on what it says about people. That is the sentence they repeat at dinner, on the plane, and to their kids. Everything before it is set-up.


Part One · The sheet

Ten at the light trap

These are the ten we can walk twenty-five metres and stake our reputation on. Odds are for a warm night, ideally new moon, ideally after rain.

01 · The moth with no mouth

Wild silk moths

Big. Heavy. Furry shoulders. Often translucent “windows” in the wing. And the giveaway: the antennae. If they look like two feathers or ferns, you are holding a male.

This animal cannot eat. Not “doesn't feel like it” — it has no working mouth and, in many species, no gut. It came out of the cocoon with a fixed tank of fat it earned as a caterpillar and roughly one to two weeks to spend it. Every wingbeat for the rest of its life is drawn from that one account, and there is no way to top it up.

So the entire body got rebuilt around one job. Those feathered antennae on the male are a scent array — in the silkworm moth, about 25,000 sensory pegs — tuned to one molecule shape, released by a female of his own species sitting motionless in a tree, possibly a kilometre away. He is not smelling “a female.” He is smelling one specific compound and is blind to almost everything else on Earth. He flies upwind through a black forest, for hours, toward a smell.

He finds her. They mate. That is the whole life. She lays. Both are dead inside a fortnight, and neither ever took a single meal.

Say this

“Everything this animal will ever do, it is doing on a lunch it ate as a caterpillar. It has no mouth. It has one job, one tank of fuel, and about a week. Imagine knowing that.”

The move

Put a male and a female side by side on the sheet — there are almost always both. Backlight the antennae with your headlamp so the combs glow. Then hand the skill over: “You can now sex every silk moth on this sheet. Go.” Guests will spend ten minutes doing it. That is ten minutes of them being a biologist instead of an audience.

Don't say

“It only lives one day.” That's the mayfly. Silk moths get days to about two weeks. Don't trade a true fact for a rounder one — guests fact-check on the flight home.

02 · The bluff

The two red eyes

A dead leaf. Genuinely — a brown, veined, boring dead leaf sitting on the sheet, hiding its hindwings. Until it isn't.

This is the single best reveal we own, and it must be run as theatre. Do not show the hindwings first. Let people look at a brown triangle and be politely unimpressed. Then it opens, and two blood-red eyes appear from nowhere.

Scientists call this a deimatic display — from the Greek for “to frighten.” It is not camouflage and it is not a poison warning. It is a bluff, and this is the beautiful part: the moth has nothing to back it up. It isn't toxic. It can't bite. It can't outfly a bird. All it owns is a fraction of a second of a bird's hesitation, and that fraction is enough to escape. The whole design of the wing exists to purchase a quarter of a second.

Classic experiments rubbed the eyespots off butterflies and put them back in front of hungry birds: much less effective. Both the sudden flash of colour and the eye pattern are doing work.

Say this

“This moth is not poisonous, it is not fast, and it cannot fight. Its entire survival strategy is one good scare. It is buying a quarter of a second — and a quarter of a second is a whole life.”

The move

Ask the group what they're looking at. Let someone say “a leaf.” Then, very gently, ease the forewing forward with a fingertip and step back. Do it once. Never repeat it on the same animal for a second group — a startle display costs energy it can't refuel (see 01).

Careful

Automeris caterpillars sting properly — burning pain for hours. This is the one group we point at and don't touch. Never let a guest handle a hairy or spiny caterpillar, ever, no exceptions.

03 · The jammer

Tiger moths

Loud clothing. Black-and-white leopard patterning, or red and yellow and iridescent blue dots. Nothing about a tiger moth is trying to hide, and that is the clue.

Anything on the sheet dressed like a warning sign is telling the truth. Most tiger moths ate toxic plants as caterpillars and kept the poison for life — they didn't make it, they stole it, and they wear the receipt.

But the real story is happening above your head, at a frequency you cannot hear. Tiger moths have ears, and bats are hunting. Detecting a bat, a tiger moth answers back — it buckles a ridged plate on its thorax to fire ultrasonic clicks. For most species that click is a warning label spoken in bat: don't, I taste terrible.

And then there's Bertholdia trigona, which is perfectly edible and lies about none of it — because it doesn't need to. It fires clicks so densely, so fast, that it jams the bat's sonar. In the lab, bats caught the moths that had been silenced roughly four times more often. It is confirmed electronic warfare, and it is the only known case in nature.

Say this

“There is a war going on above your head right now, and it's being fought at a frequency you can't hear. A bat screams, listens for the echo — and this moth answers with static, on purpose, to blind it. We invented radar jamming in the 1940s. This has been running for millions of years.”

The move

Kill the lights for fifteen seconds and let people watch bats work the trap. The trap is a buffet and the bats know it. Then point back at the sheet: “Some of these are shouting at them right now.”

04 · The engine

Hawkmoths / sphinx moths

Built like a fighter jet — narrow swept wings, torpedo body, hits the sheet hard. Sexing: females carry a fat abdomen full of eggs; males are slimmer with a tapered, often tufted tip and thicker antennae.

This is the hummingbird of the night, and the resemblance isn't an accident — it's two animals solving the same problem, hovering at a flower, and arriving at the same shape. Some can hit fifty kilometres an hour. Some have a tongue two or three times the length of their own body, coiled up like a garden hose.

And before it can fly, it has to warm up its engine. Insects are supposed to be at the mercy of the air temperature. A hawkmoth isn't: it sits and shivers, running its flight muscles against each other without moving the wings, until its thorax is hot — over 30 °C — and then it launches. If you hold one you can feel it vibrating. That is an animal running a warm-up lap.

The best hawkmoth story is about a man who never saw one. In 1862 Darwin was sent a Madagascan orchid with a nectar tube nearly thirty centimetres long. He said: then there must be a moth with a thirty-centimetre tongue. He was laughed at. It was found four decades after he died.

Say this

“Darwin looked at a flower and predicted an animal nobody had ever seen — because the flower made no sense without it. He died before anyone found it. Twenty-one years later, they did.”

The move

Sexing, out loud, as a group. Line up three hawkmoths and let guests call male or female. Getting it right is a real skill acquired in ninety seconds, and skills are what people take home.

05 · The forgery

Wax-tailed planthopper

A finger-sized hopper with a netted forewing, trailing a spray of long white filaments like a bridal train. Two of them live on the host tree beside the platform.

This is the most commercially valuable animal on the property, because it is the one that doesn't run away. It sits on its host tree. It returns to the same spot. A guide who knows that tree has a guaranteed wow in their pocket, walking up the hill, every single day.

Now the story. Those white plumes are not fungus, not lichen, not feathers. It is wax, extruded from its own abdomen out of glands, built by the animal itself. And the leading hypothesis for why is one of the strangest ideas in tropical biology: it is dressed as its own corpse.

Look at the plumes, then look at any photo of an insect killed by a parasitic fungus — that white, fibrous, radiating bloom. A predator has excellent reasons to leave a fungus-killed body alone: it's spoiled, it's contaminated, it's full of live spores that will do the same to you. So the hopper wears the uniform of the thing that would kill it. It is alive, healthy, and impersonating its own death, permanently.

Be honest with the guests: entomologists do not agree. Others argue the wax is simply mechanical — a predator grabs a fistful of dry wax and the hopper is already gone. Say that. “Nobody has settled this. You are standing in front of an open scientific question, twenty metres from where you had dinner.” That is a better souvenir than a fact.

Say this

“It grows this out of its own body. The best guess we have is that it's a costume — it's dressed up as a corpse killed by a fungus, because nothing wants to eat that. It's a healthy animal walking around impersonating its own death.”

The move

Learn the tree. Mark it. Every guide should be able to walk to it in the dark. Show it on the way up the hill on day one, then on day two show the real thing it's imitating (see 10). The pair, in that order, is the strongest sequence in this manual.

06 · The four-part lie

Lanternfly / peanut-head

Worth the wait

Spot it in five seconds

Impossible to miss: a hollow, bulbous fake head at the front, patterned like a small lizard or a caiman, with painted teeth and a false eye.

This animal runs four different lies at once, stacked. One: that swollen head is a hollow decoy patterned like a reptile — many people meeting one at eye level flinch first and think later. Two: if that fails, it snaps open its wings and shows two big eyespots. Three: the flash may buy it a jump. Four: if you keep pushing, it sprays a foul defensive chemical.

It is a sap-drinker. It has no jaws worth the name. Every single thing about it is theatre.

And then there is our own contribution. Costa Rican folklore holds that if a machaca bites you, you have twenty-four hours to sleep with your partner or you die. The animal cannot bite. Somewhere in this country's history, somebody had a very good excuse and it has outlived them by generations. Use it — guests love it, and it does the real work: it demonstrates that our fear of insects is inherited, not earned.

Say this

“Fake head, fake eyes, fake teeth, and a stink bomb — and it drinks tree sap. Every threat it makes is a lie. And in Costa Rica we invented a lie about it too, which tells you more about us than about the animal.”

The move

Ask a guest to say which end is the head. They will get it wrong. That misfire is the story — a bird's brain makes exactly the same mistake, and that mistake is the entire point of the animal.

07 · The lamp

Headlight / fire beetle

A big brown click beetle with two pale spots on the shoulders. In the dark, those two spots are on — a steady green, not a flash.

Two green lamps on the shoulders, and a third, brighter orange one on the underside of the abdomen that only lights when it flies — so the animal changes what it looks like the instant it leaves the ground.

It is reckoned to be the brightest bioluminescent insect known — around 45 millilamberts, which is the technical way of saying bright enough to read by. Unlike a firefly it does not blink; it holds a constant glow and turns the brightness up when something touches it.

Then the human part. Before there were flashlights in the American tropics, there were these. People kept them in perforated gourds as reading lamps. Travellers tied them to their toes to light a night trail. Women wore them, alive, as jewellery.

And the second trick, once you've had the light moment: put it on its back. It snaps its own body and fires itself into the air with an audible click — no legs involved. A beetle with headlights and an ejector seat.

Say this

“People used to carry these in a gourd and read by them. Tie them to your toes and walk a trail at night. Before we had a flashlight, we had a beetle — and we borrowed it.”

The move

The best sixty seconds we can give a guest. Cup it in two hands, gather everyone in tight, and kill every light on the property — headlamps, phones, the trap. Silence. Then open your hands slightly. Release it after, in the same place.

08 · The heavyweight

Hercules & elephant beetles

Spot it in five seconds

You'll hear it before you see it. Males carry the horn; females are hornless, smaller, and just as good a story. Megasoma is the black velvet one; Dynastes is the olive one with the long curved horn.

Three facts, and you only get to use one per guest, so choose by the audience.

For the kids: that horn is not a horn. It's an extension of its shell, and it is a lever. Two males meet on a sap flow, hook up like wrestlers, and each tries to pry the other off the tree and drop him. The horn is a crowbar built for one argument.

For the adults: the animal in your hand is the short part of its life. It spent one to two years underground as a grub the size of your fist, eating rotten wood in total darkness, to buy a few months up here. Everything you're admiring was paid for with two years of chewing dead trees.

For the ones who want magic: a Hercules beetle changes colour with humidity. Its shell holds a spongy nanostructured layer; dry, it scatters light as yellow-olive. As the air gets wet the layer fills with water and the beetle goes black. It is, functionally, a barometer with legs. It knows it's going to rain before we do.

Say this

“Two years in the dark, eating a dead tree, for four months of this. And it changes colour when the humidity rises — the beetle turns black before the rain arrives. You're holding a barometer.”

The move

Let people hold it — the single most effective fear-breaking animal we have, and it never hurt anybody. Support the body from underneath, let it grip a finger, and warn people the claws feel like velcro. Photograph it on the trunk with the valley behind: the hand shot is a zoo shot, the tree shot is a Costa Rica shot.

House rule

One beetle, one night, one group. Photograph it, release it where you found it, and don't be grabbing the same individual every evening. If a beetle is showing up for the third time this week, it goes in the record book, not in a guest's hand. Our credibility on this is worth more than one more photo.

09 · The ear on the knee

Katydids

Leaf mimics — some copy dead leaves down to the fungal spots and the chewed edges. Long backswept antennae, longer than the body: that's how you separate them from grasshoppers.

This is our best “sit down for this” fact, and it's the one that made a guide's eyes go wide on the course.

Katydids hear with their front legs. That much has been known a long time. What was found in 2012, when researchers put a Colombian katydid into a micro-CT scanner, is that it is not a simple eardrum. It is a human ear, compressed into a millimetre.

There's a pair of eardrums. Behind them, a stiff plate that works as a lever — exactly the job our three middle-ear bones do. Ours amplifies at a ratio of about 17 to 1; the katydid's runs about 13 to 1. Behind that is a tapering, fluid-filled tube: an uncoiled cochlea. And the ear canal? It's a breathing tube. It starts at a hole in the side of its chest, runs down inside the leg, and arrives at the back of the eardrum.

Two lineages that split hundreds of millions of years ago, with nothing in common, independently built the same machine. Which tells you it isn't a coincidence — it's physics. There is only one good way to move a sound out of air and into fluid, and evolution has found it twice.

Say this

“Its ear is on its knee, and it isn't a simple ear — it's your ear. Eardrum, a lever like your middle-ear bones, a fluid tube like your cochlea. We haven't shared an ancestor with this animal in hundreds of millions of years, and we both built the same thing. That's not luck. That's physics.”

The move

Hand lens, front leg, just below the knee. There's a slit. Let each guest find it themselves — don't point at it. The instant of “oh — that's an ear” is worth more than anything you can say.

10 · The one that keeps time

The zombie fungus

Spot it in five seconds

An insect in the wrong place, gripping too hard, with something growing out of it. Once guides have the search image they start finding them constantly — that's the training goal here.

Run this after the wax-tailed hopper, so guests already know something is imitating it.

Over two hundred Ophiocordyceps species have been described, and many are specialists — one fungus, one host. Every insect in this forest has one aimed at it. The best-studied version takes an ant.

A spore lands. It gets inside. It grows a scaffold of fungal cells through the ant's muscle bundles. And here's the fact that broke the story open, from a Penn State study in 2017: there is no fungus in the brain. They looked, with fluorescent microscopy, and the brain is clean. The fungus is holding the muscles directly.

Then it makes the ant leave the colony, climb to about twenty-five centimetres above the ground — the exact zone where the humidity is right for fruiting — face a particular direction, and bite down. Ninety-eight percent of the time, onto a major leaf vein. And infected ants bite in synchrony, around solar noon. The fungus keeps time.

Days later a stalk grows out of the back of the ant's head and rains spores onto the trail its sisters use. And we know how old this is, because there are fossil leaves in Germany, 48 million years old, carrying those exact death-grip bite marks.

Say this

“Everyone says the fungus eats its brain. It doesn't — they looked. The brain is untouched. The fungus is holding the muscles. Which means the ant is still in there, still itself, watching its own legs carry it up a plant to a height it did not choose. That's the horror. The driver is awake. The steering wheel just isn't connected any more.”

The move

Teach the search image on day one and let guests hunt on day two. Whoever finds one gets to tell the group. You've just made a guest the guide for ninety seconds — that's the moment they stop being a customer.


Part Two · Daylight

Four on the trail and the river

The night trap is the reveal. These four are what keep insects present for the rest of the trip — on the hike, on the raft, and at lunch.

11 · The farmers

Leafcutter ants

Myrmicinae: Atta, Acromyrmex  ·  Zompopas

Guaranteed

Every guest has seen the green ribbon. Almost none of them know the first thing about it. Open by taking their assumption away.

They do not eat the leaves. They can't — they cannot digest them. The leaves are compost. Underground there is a fungus, and the fungus is the food. These are farmers, and the farm is the point.

It is a single crop strain, effectively a clone, carried between generations by hand: a virgin queen leaving on her mating flight takes a piece of the family fungus in a pouch in her mouth. She flies, mates with several males in a single afternoon — banking somewhere around 200 to 300 million sperm — lands, tears off her own wings, digs, spits out the fungus, and starts a farm. She will never mate again, across a life of ten to twenty years and something like 150 million daughters. A mature nest can hold eight million ants and tunnel down through five acres.

Ant agriculture is roughly 55 to 66 million years old. Human agriculture is about 12,000. They were farming while T. rex was still recent history.

And where there is monoculture, there is blight. A fungus called Escovopsis eats their crop and only their crop, and unchecked it collapses the colony. So the ants keep a bacterium growing on their own bodies — visible as a chalky white bloom on young workers — that manufactures an antifungal. It is Pseudonocardia, from the same family of soil bacteria that gave human medicine streptomycin and tetracycline.

The ants had antibiotics first. They've been applying them for tens of millions of years without breeding runaway resistance. We've had ours for about eighty years and we're already losing that race.

Say this

“They invented farming sixty million years before us, and antibiotics too — and they're still not losing to resistance, which is more than we can say. There's a city under your feet older than the Andes, and it's run entirely by daughters.”

The move — the hitchhiker

Look for a tiny ant riding on top of a carried leaf. She isn't lazy and she isn't a passenger. There's a fly that hovers over the column trying to lay an egg in a carrier's neck — and the carrier, jaws full of leaf, cannot defend herself. So her sister rides shotgun and swats. Show a guest that, and you've given them a Pixar scene that happens to be true.

12 · The landlord

Cecropia & its ants

Guaranteed — it's the first tree to take a landslide

Guests already love this tree because sloths eat it. Give them the second life it's leading.

The trunk is hollow, chambered like bamboo. And at each chamber the tree builds a pre-weakened door — a thin oval spot in the wall called a prostoma. The tree builds a door for a tenant it has never met.

A young queen chews through, moves in, raises workers, and they chew through the internal walls until the whole trunk is one connected apartment building. Then the tree starts feeding them: at the base of each leaf stalk there's a pad of dense felt, and out of that pad grow tiny white beads packed with glycogen — which is animal storage sugar. A tree, manufacturing animal food, on a schedule, for its bodyguards.

In return the ants strip every vine that touches the trunk and swarm anything that starts eating a leaf. In field experiments, saplings with ants grow measurably better than saplings without.

Say this

“The tree builds the doors, builds the rooms, and cooks the food. It has never met the tenant and it never negotiates. It just makes the offer and waits — and an ant queen accepts it, and defends the building for the rest of her life.”

The move

Knock the trunk gently and step back. Ants pour out in seconds. Then rewind: “This tree is the first thing to grow on a landslide beside this river. That's why it's here in this quantity, and it built a whole army before anything else could take the ground.”

13 · The perfumers

Orchid bees

The most repeatable trick in this manual, and one of the best stories.

Male orchid bees don't collect nectar and they don't collect pollen. They collect smell. From orchids, from rotting wood, from fungus, from tree resin — and they store it in hollow pockets inside their swollen hind legs, blending a bouquet over the course of weeks. Weeks of shopping, into one bottle.

Then a male takes a display perch in the understory and performs: high-speed video shows him transferring perfume from the hind-leg pockets onto tufts of hair on his middle legs, and fanning it out. Females arrive from downwind and choose on the blend.

Biologists described the behaviour over fifty years ago and argued about what it was for until 2023, when someone ran the clean experiment: in flight cages, males given a top-up of extra perfume out-mated the control males. It's a sexual signal, and now we know it.

And the plants figured it out first. About 10% of all neotropical orchids are pollinated by these bees — the flower isn't paying him in food. It's paying him in the ingredient he needs to be attractive, and he carries its pollen away as a side effect of shopping for cologne.

Say this

“He spends his life collecting scent — from flowers, from rot, from fungus — and blending it in his own legs. Then he stands on a leaf and fans it, and she picks him for the blend. An entire family of orchids exists on the strength of one male bee's vanity.”

The move — the cotton trick

Cotton ball, a few drops of oil of wintergreen (methyl salicylate), clove oil (eugenol) or eucalyptol, pinned to a leaf in a sunny gap. Then say what will happen before it happens: “In about five minutes, metallic green bees will land here. Every one of them will be male. Not a single female is coming. Watch.” They arrive, often several species. Predicting the future in front of guests is the highest-value thing a guide ever does. Costa Rica has roughly fifty species — start a POC list.

14 · The dowry

This one is free money. It happens every trip, in front of every raft, and nobody has ever explained it to them.

That crowd on the wet sand is almost entirely male. And they are not drinking — they are mining. A caterpillar's diet of leaves is nearly salt-free, so an adult male will pass litres of water through his body to strip out the sodium.

Then he gives it away. When he mates he transfers a package — the spermatophore — that carries sperm plus a dowry of sodium and amino acids. She takes the salt and puts it into her eggs. In some species, more sodium means more eggs.

And the reason she isn't on the sand bar with him: an open riverbank is the most dangerous place in this valley if you're a butterfly. Wide open, no cover, birds everywhere. So the males take that risk on the females' behalf, and hand the salt over later.

“Every butterfly on that bar is male. They're not drinking — they're mining salt, and they're doing it to hand it over as a wedding gift. She'll put it straight into the eggs. The females stay in the forest because the beach is where you get eaten. He's taking the risk for her.”

The move

Call it from the raft before you reach the bar. “Coming up on the left — a crowd of butterflies. All male. Here's why.” Announcing it before it appears is what makes a guide sound like they own the river.

Correction to the version going around

It isn't primarily about avoiding dehydration on a long flight. The published work points at sodium — as a nuptial gift and as fuel for nerve and flight muscle. The salt-dowry version is both truer and a better story, so there's no reason to keep the old one.

Running the experience

The shape of it, at three lengths

  1. Ten minutes (after dinner, casual). Walk out. Sixty seconds of silence in front of the sheet — no talking. Then one animal, one impossible fact, one turn. Leave them wanting it. Nothing kills the trap faster than exhausting it on night one.
  2. Twenty minutes (the standard). Silence → the numbers (Part Zero) → one big animal they can hold → one bluff they can watch work (02 or 06) → one thing that isn't an insect at all (10). Close on the turn.
  3. Forty minutes (the enthusiasts, the photographers, the ones who won't leave). Hand over the tools. Lens, sexing, the search image for cordyceps, the iNaturalist app. Stop performing and start co-investigating. This is where guests turn into repeat guests.

Part Four

Becoming the reference

Anyone can buy a light and a sheet. What nobody else on the Pacuare will have in three years is the record.

Every session, someone logs it. It takes four minutes.

  1. Photograph what's new. From directly above, and from the side. Include something for scale. Sharp beats artistic — this photo's job is identification, not Instagram.
  2. Upload to iNaturalist under a Pacuare Outdoor Center / Rio Vista project. The global community will identify a large share of them for free, and every confirmed ID makes the list more valuable.
  3. Log the conditions: date, time, lamp type, moon phase, weather, temperature. Elevation is 300 m and doesn't change — but stating it in every record is what makes the dataset citable.
  4. Keep the running species list visible to the whole guide team, and put the count on the wall. When a guide adds number 400, that's a moment for the team, and a number that goes straight into how we sell this place.

Where this goes: a lodge with a verified species list becomes a destination for macro photographers and entomology groups — a market that books in low season, stays longer, spends more, and needs no rapids. We don't have to compete with anybody for a sloth sighting. We just have to be the people who wrote it all down.

What the three days actually proved

Watch what happened to the people on that course, because it's the same arc every guest will run, and it's the product.

Day one, they were afraid. Day two, they were curious. Day three, they were the ones finding things and calling everyone over. Seventy-two hours to move a person from fear to fascination — that is a bigger transformation than any rapid on this river delivers, and it costs us a bulb and a sheet.

And here is the closing line, which belongs to the course and should be used carefully, once, at the end:

“In three days we stood in front of thousands of animals. Thousands of species. There was exactly one we told you to be careful with. Nobody got hurt — nobody has ever gotten hurt. So where did all that fear come from? Not from the insects. We were taught it. And it's worth asking what else we've been taught to be afraid of, on nothing but the way something looks.”

That's the invisible wealth argument, made by a moth. The forest here isn't richer than everywhere else because it has more monkeys. It's richer because of what's happening in a square foot of it that nobody bothers to look at — and once someone has genuinely seen that, a sloth stops being the point.
